In freezing temperatures, you should keep your pet inside and protect them from the cold. If you do need to take your pet outside, limit their time and monitor them closely. Protect your pets paws Apply paw protectant Before going outside, massage petroleum jelly or a vet-approved paw protectant into your pet's paws. Use booties: Booties can protect your pet's paws from salt and sand. Wash your pet's paws: After walks, wash and dry your pet's paws to remove ice, salt, and chemicals. Limit your pets time Outside In very cold weather, take short, frequent walks instead of long walks. If your pet is spending more time outdoors increase their food to make up for the calories they are burning off to stay warm. Take care of their coat and skin Remove any snow from between foot pads. If possible, keep your dog's coat longer in winter for warmth. If your dog is short-haired, consider getting a coat or sweater for your pet. Keep pet bathing to a minimum when it's cold to avoid dry skin
